Should you do a bikini wax at home?

Believe it or not, whatever your salon lady can do, you can do it at home! Bikini waxing might seem like a daunting task to do at home, but with the right at-home bikini wax kit and the right spirit, you can ace it.

Why should you do a bikini wax at home?
  • You save those big bucks. A salon visit to get a bikini wax done can cost you more than $50 per session

And you have to do this every 3 weeks depending on your hair growth.  You can invest an at home bikini waxing kit for the same price, and do all your waxing at home for months!

  • You can wax from the comfort of your couch
The comfort of your home just hits differently. Especially if you are someone who is not comfortable with the idea of lying exposed in front of another person.
  • You can do it at your own pace
Let’s face it, bikini waxing is not the most fun of experiences. For those who have low pain tolerance, the constant tugging and pulling during a waxing session can leave you gasping for air. You could do it at home at your own pace, and take as many breaks as possible.

All of these reasons are good enough to consider doing a bikini wax at home.

Creating the perfect set-up at home for a bikini waxing

Let’s get real, every time you go to the salon, your salon lady asks you to be more flexible each time to get to every little corner down south. But does it get easier at home? It certainly does get more comfortable at home if you can create the right setup. Here’s how you can create your own waxing corner at home:

  • Spot a favorite corner in your home- Find a calm and cozy spot at home, If it has a full-size mirror then that’s a bonus! Your setup can be directly opposite to the mirror. If you do not have a mirror in this corner, set one up against the wall.
  • Organize your waxing supplies- Lay a rug on the floor and organize your at-home bikini wax kit and other waxing supplies. But also leave sufficient space in the middle of the rug for you to lie down.
  • Set a pillow for extra support- Grab a pillow and set it right in the middle of your rug. This is to support your posture while you’re waxing.
  • Arch your back and lay low- Now, lie on your back on the rug with the pillow under your lower back to give you a little arch so that everything in your nether regions is accessible to you.

  • Face the mirror- Make sure you’re lying opposite the large mirror that you set up earlier. This way you get to see what you’re doing at all times.

Now that you’re all set and comfortable, you can start waxing!

The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide to Bikini Wax with an At-Home Bikini Wax Kit

  • Step 1- Cleanse

Cleanse your skin gently with a mild soap or gentle intimate cleanser before your waxing schedule. Gently pat the skin dry with a towel. Do not put in any lotion or moisturizer.

  • Step 2- Prep your skin

Apply the pre-wax spray to your inner thighs, but do not go any deeper with the spray if you plan to wax your genitals.

  • Step 3- Warm up your wax beads

Pop your beads into a bowl and put the bowl in the microwave for about 20 seconds. If you want to avoid the mess and want the perfect honey-like consistency, using a wax warmer is the best way to do it. Warm up your beads to 150-175 degrees Fahrenheit. Your wax should look something like honey.

  • Step 4- Scoop up your wax and spread it thick

Next, we apply the wax gently. Pull your skin taut with two fingers, and use the other hand to spread the wax nice and thick. Go at least for two layers. This helps the wax stick to the hair properly. Apply your wax in the direction of the hair growth.

  • Step 5- Pull off the wax

Pull your skin taut with one hand, and pull the wax off, close to your body, in the opposite direction.

  • Step 6- After-wax spray

How to Make Bikini Waxing at Home Less Painful?

Choose hard wax

Hard wax is gentler on your skin, especially your bikini area. The skin on your bikini area is thin and delicate, soft wax further irritates the skin by sticking to it. Hard wax only sticks to your hair and does not tug at your skin when you pull it off. The Tress Wellness at-home wax kit comes with a bundle of hard wax beads formulated with skin-loving ingredients for a pain-free waxing experience. As a bonus, we also have the Bikini Star Beads that are formulated especially for waxing the delicate skin down south!

Let your hair grow

For a smoother and less painful bikini waxing, you need to grow your hair out. It should be at least 1/4th of an inch or at least the length of a rice grain. This way there’s so much more that your wax can grab and you won’t have to go through the pain without getting any of the hair removed.

Trim your hair if it’s too long

The right length of hair matters a lot in terms of how much pain you’re likely to feel. The wax cannot pull out hair that’s too long. It tugs at the hair without removing it completely. Ouch! Do not put yourself through that pain. Trim your hair to a quarter of an inch, and go ahead!

Apply pressure with your palm

One of our more popular superstar tips is to apply pressure on your bikini line with your palm as soon as you pull off your wax. Rubbing the area gently along with applying pressure helps take away from the sensation of pain.

Don’t drink Caffeine before Waxing

When it comes to a pain-free waxing experience, avoiding that pre-wax espresso or energy drink can be the best decision you take. Caffeine can heighten your skin's sensitivity, making the waxing process feel more intense than it needs to be.

Don’t wax around or during your period

Waxing and periods? Let's not mix the two! Waxing during your periods can bring extra discomfort due to heightened sensitivity. The body's pain receptors are a tad more active during this time, making the experience less enjoyable.

Bikini Wax Aftercare

Now that your bikini line is all smooth and set, it’s time to pamper your delicate skin. If redness, bumps, and ingrown hair down south are not your jam, then you would not want to skip an aftercare routine.

Here are some must-dos and no-nos that you must swear by after a good bikini wax to achieve supple skin for days!

Say Yes to Hydration!

The bikini area is very sensitive and all that tugging and pulling can irritate and sensitize the area even further. Aloe vera or cica is great for soothing and calming down the skin after waxing. Use a post-wax spray followed by a lightweight gel moisturizer to help your skin rejuvenate and reduce redness and inflammation.

Moisturizing is also crucial to reduce the risk of getting dry and flaky skin in the bikini region which can lead to ingrown hair. Do not go too heavy on cream-based moisturizers or oils because these can clog your pores and increase the risk of rashes and ingrown hair. If you want a sure-shot after-wax soother that calms the skin and gives just the right amount of hydration, the Tress Wellness after-wax spray is the perfect solution. Enriched with aloe vera and chamomile, it instantly calms and hydrates post-waxing. Say hello to painless bliss with Tress Wellness After-Wax Spray!

No Stepping in the Sun or Hopping in the Pool

We know that you want to flaunt your beach body in a bikini right after getting waxed, but you should not step into the sun without covering your bikini line for about 48 hours. Your skin is sensitive and irritated, and its protective barrier is compromised during this time due to waxing.

Direct exposure to sunlight can worsen the redness and inflammation and also cause hyperpigmentation in the area. Similarly, pool water is often treated with chemicals, and stepping into the pool right after getting your bikini wax done can severely irritate your skin. Even if you are planning on swimming in the ocean, it is best to put it off for a couple of days because ocean water can cause bacterial infection in your bikini area.

Bring out the Cotton Granny Underpants: Let your bikini area breathe

Avoid wearing tight underwear or pants right after your bikini wax. Polyester, rayon, nylon, and any other synthetic fabric might bother your skin post-waxing. Other heavy fabrics like leather and wool should also be avoided during this time. Make those cotton pants and underpants your best friend in this stage because they will be gentle on your skin, and let it breathe.

Keep It Cool, Skip the Sweat

via GIPHY

Let's talk about the importance of avoiding exercise and heavy sweating for the next 24-48 hours. Why, you ask? Well, after waxing, your hair follicles are open and vulnerable to bacterial growth and potential irritation. We don’t want to spoil your date night plans but you don’t want to get too cozy with your partner right after waxing down there. Engaging in rigorous physical activity or sweating profusely during this time can increase the likelihood of skin issues, including redness or even ingrown hair.

Exfoliate, But Not Quite

Exfoliation is a great way to minimize clogged pores and reduce ingrown hair after waxing, but you have to be very cautious about this aftercare post-bikini waxing. Do not exfoliate your skin for 48 hours after you’ve had your bikini wax because exfoliants are usually harsh on your skin. Since the skin is delicate after waxing, neither granular scrubs nor chemical exfoliants are safe to use at this point. Exfoliating too soon can cause breakouts and rash flares. Continue exfoliating your skin on a regular basis after a week of getting your bikini wax. This removes oil, dirt, and dead skin cells from your skin and prevents ingrown hair.

After all, bikini wax prep starts with proper aftercare. To know more about bikini wax aftercare, check out this blog on bikini wax aftercare.

Bikini Wax Styles to Try out At Home: What’s Trending?

Yes! You read that right. There is more than one way to do a bikini waxing. There are also styles that are quite popular with the ladies! Grab your at home bikini wax kit and try out your favorite styles.

The Classic Bikini Wax

The classic bikini wax is like the little black dress of bikini waxes. It's a standard style where the hair is removed from the area outside of your panty line. It's perfect for those who want to tidy up their bikini line but don't want to go too crazy. Think of it as a simple and chic option that never goes out of style.

Brazilian Bikini Wax

If you want to go all-out and remove all the hair down there, then the Brazilian bikini wax is the one for you. This style removes hair from the front, back, and everything in between. You can achieve a completely smooth and hairless look effortlessly at home with a Brazilian wax kit. But beware, this style is not for the faint of heart! It can be painful and takes some time to get used to, but many women swear by it.

Hollywood Bikini Wax

The Hollywood bikini wax is like the Brazilian wax's wild and crazy cousin. It's similar to the Brazilian, but instead of leaving a small strip or triangle of hair on the pubic bone, all the hair is removed from the entire pubic area. It's perfect for those who want to feel completely bare down there. This is for perfectionists, as it is more time-consuming than all the bikini waxing styles.

French Bikini Wax

The French bikini wax is like the "je ne sais quoi" of bikini waxes. It's a more modest version of the Brazilian and Hollywood waxes. A French bikini wax involves removing hair from the labia and leaving a small strip of hair on the pubic bone. It's perfect for those who want to tidy up the bikini area but don't want to go completely bare. It's a great option if you're not ready to go full-on Brazilian just yet.

High Bikini Wax

The high bikini wax is a trendier and more fun version of the classic bikini wax. This style removes hair from the sides of the pubic area, including the upper thighs. It's perfect for those who want a more extensive waxing treatment than the classic bikini wax but don't want to go all the way with a Brazilian or Hollywood wax. It's a great option if you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new.
